NEW CLINICAL TEACHING AND PRACTICE LAB OPENS
IN SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES
A new, state of the art clinical lab that enlarges teaching and practice facilities and expands the range of equipment used by students in the School of Health Sciences has opened at the north campus. The lab will be used primarily by Nursing students in the collaborative University of New Brunswick-Humber Bachelor of Nursing Degree Program, Post Graduate Nursing (Continuing Education) Programs and the Practical Nursing Program and by students in the Personal Support Training and Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Programs.
The new facility consists of four clinical labs, each of which is equipped as a stand-alone hospital station, two seminar rooms and a central storage and dispensing room. It has a total of 34 hospital beds, 15 more than the previous Nursing labs, and increases the space by nearly 2,000 square feet. Each clinical lab and seminar room is equipped with a computer and wired for multi-media use, allowing students to watch videos and power point presentations to enhance their learning and practice before they go into the actual clinical area.
State of the art training material ensures students have what they need to practise a wide range of procedures such as wound care, intramuscular injections and surgical procedures. Recent additions include a model of a pregnant woman, IV trainer and ear examination simulator.
The new clinical lab was designed to meet baccalaureate degree requirements in Nursing. Students in the UNB-Humber Bachelor of Nursing Program take all their courses at Humber for all four years and graduates receive a BN from the University of New Brunswick. Clinical practice begins in first year and students get a broad range of experience in both hospital and community placements. “Lab practice with current equipment, in a setting very much like a hospital, helps students to reach a good comfort level before they go into a clinical setting,” says Cindy Hunt, Humber’s associate dean, Nursing. “The new facility is bright, spacious and well-equipped and we know our students are going to like it and benefit from it.”
BACHELOR OF NURSING AT HUMBER COLLEGE
A COLLABORATIVE NURSING DEGREE PROGRAM* BETWEEN
THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW
BRUNSWICK AND HUMBER COLLEGE
Combining 75 years of experience as leaders in Nursing education in Canada, Humber College and the University of New Brunswick (UNB) have joined together to offer their new UNB and Humber College Collaborative Bachelor of Nursing Degree Program. This four-year undergraduate degree program, based on the latest advances in Nursing theory and practice, is offered for Ontario's Nursing students at Humber's north campus in Toronto. Graduates will receive the UNB Bachelor of Nursing Degree. Pending accreditation of the program by the Canadian Association of University Schools of Nursing, graduates will be qualified to write the Provincial Nurse Registration Examination as required by the College of Nurses of Ontario. The partnership of UNB and Humber responds to the new entry to practice requirement that all new Ontario Nurses must have a baccalaureate degree in Nursing starting in 2005.
*This program of study is offered in Ontario under a ministerial consent, which has been granted for students entering the program during the period January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2004. The minister has extended the consent during a formal review period. This program is offered under the written consent of the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities for the period January 1, 2005 to June 30, 2005. Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g., acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions). All students admitted into the program, in September 2005, can be assured that they will have the opportunity to complete their degree requirements at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning based on the academic regulations governing the program. The program of study being offered in Ontario is equivalent to the program being offered by the institution in its home jurisdiction.
In 2003, following a formal evaluation process, the Board of Accreditation of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) conferred candidacy status on the collaborative UNB-Humber BN program. The purpose of CASN accreditation is to encourage excellence in nursing education. The UNB and Humber partnership responds to the new entry to practice requirement that all new Ontario nurses must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing starting in 2005.
