Childbirth Educators Multidiscipline Certificate Program
Knowledge Gained Through Prior Learning
Students may apply to be assessed for equivalent knowledge gained through work or volunteer experience, self-study, or from other academic institutions.
Application can be made by requesting the proper forms and criteria from the Registrar's Office or from the Childbirth Educators Program Coordinator.
Types of Assessment and How to Apply
Exemption Assessment
Prior learning gained from academic study should be applied for as follows:
- Collect your equivalent credit courses from an academic institution received within the past five years
- Submit a copy of the course outline indicating hours, evaluation criteria, teacher qualifications, course description and outcome objectives along with your application
- Provide a copy of a grade transcript
- Complete the exemption application and pay the fee
- Submit the completed exemption application with the supportive academic documents to the Registrar's Office
Prior Learning Assessment
Prior learning gained from self-study, professional or volunteer experience may be assessed in two ways:
Challenge Examination:
Students must write all the examinations and/or assessments in the course
Portfolio Assessment:
Student must submit a resume, copy of projects, research and presentations that demonstrate application of content covered in the course. Following review of the portfolio, the applicant may be required to write all or some of the course examinations or assessments.
How to Apply
- Complete a PLA application form
- Pay the fee
- Request a course outline and exam blueprint to prepare for the challenge examinations as required
- Collect together data for the portfolio assessment
- Submit assessment for the challenge
The Courses and Specific Criteria
CBED 103: History and Philosophy of Childbirth Education
Exemption:
- University or College level course of equivalent hours and content taken within the past five years
Challenge:
CBED 202: Adult Education and Group Dynamics
Exemption:
- University or College level course of equivalent hours and content taken within the past five years
Challenge:
- Currently employed as an educator and utilizing an experiential or cooperative learning model in the classroom
CBED 203: Pain Management During Labour and Delivery
Exemption:
- Doula certificate completed within the past five years
- OBST 103 from Humber College within past five years
- Any academic course from a College or University of equivalent hours and content within past five years
Challenge:
- Applicants who have attended a Penny Simkin Ltd., Doula workshop within the past five years
CBED 204: Labour and Delivery Observations
Exemption:
- Clinical experience within the past five years of at least 70 hours in a L & D setting achieved while taking an approved maternity course, e.g. Humber College Maternity Certificate (Must have observed both vaginal and cesarean deliveries)
- Completion of midwifery program within the past five years
- Completion of a ministry approved nursing certificate program within the past five years
Challenge:
- RN/Physician/Midwife/Doula Support worker with labour and delivery experience in a Canadian setting within the past five years
- Certified Doula support volunteer with a minimum of 70 hours who is currently volunteering
CBED 205: Prenatal Class Observations
Exemption:
- Completion of a Doula certificate or other Childbirth Education program within the past five years which included prenatal class observation
Challenge:
Completion of Prenatal class observation report utilizing guidelines provided in CBED 204
- Letter or equivalent received from health professional where classes were observed (e.g. Classes offered in a work setting)
CBED 303: Curriculum Development 2: Practical Application
Challenge:
- Completion of the curriculum utilizing the guidelines provided in the course
CBED 410: Teaching Practicum
Exemption:
- Evaluation through employing agency where the evaluator has evaluated 50% or more of the series
Challenge:
- Evaluation by a peer approved by the program Coordinator from Women's College Campus Site utilizing the criteria for evaluation provided in the course
OBST 106: Breastfeeding Basics
Exemption:
- Currently certified as an IBCLC
- Any academic course of equivalent hours and content
Challenge:
- Anyone who feels they have the knowledge but does not meet the other criteria must write all examinations in the course
