Childbirth Educators: Level I Courses Level I consists of four courses: Childbirth Education Study Guide: Essential Content for Curriculum Planning CBED 102 Pre-requisite: Undergraduate or postgraduate diploma or degree. Participants will complete a self-study manual covering physical, psycho-social, and medical aspects of childbearing. A comprehensive examination (3 hrs.) is scheduled each semester. The examination must be completed before registering for the second level of the program. Breastfeeding Basics 0BST 106 (21 Hrs.) Pre-requisite: Acceptance into the program (other health professionals interested in this course may contact the program coordinator) This course introduces the student to assessment and management of common breastfeeding concerns in the mother's initial learning process. The course will focus on establishing a supportive, caring environment that encourages women to breastfeed, including how this is achieved in the short-term counselling relationship. Students will be encouraged to critically examine their breastfeeding knowledge base, attitudes and biases. Discussions will be based on current research findings. Emphasis is placed on critically examining theoretical frameworks to establish "Baby Friendly" environments in the hospital and community. Information will be distributed in class for those students interested in writing the Lactation Consultants Certification Exams. Approved for IBCLE CERP credits. History and Philosophy Of Childbirth CBED 103 (39 Hrs.) Pre-requisite: Acceptance into the program, or by special permission This course explores the history of childbirth in Canada and North America. It explores Canada's unique development and contribution to the childbirth education profession. Students will be encouraged to explore thier own values and beliefs regarding birth and childbirth preparation. For an optimum learning experience, students are expected to review the required reading prior to each class and to participate in all group activities. Issues In Childbirth CBED 104 (45 Hrs.) Pre-requisite: CBED 103 Through student presentations this course examines pertinent issues related to childbirth. Topics include: alternatives to traditional care, midwifery, prenatal testing, research, access, sexual abuse, technology in childbearing, etc. Emphasis will be placed on developing teaching strategies to facilitate informal discussions in childbirth classes on the topics listed. |
