Childbirth Educators Multidiscipline Certificate Program

The Childbirth Educators Multidiscipline Certificate Program is a unique, four level, part-time program. As the only Childbirth Educators Certificate Program in Canada approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, this unique partnership has attracted students from diverse backgrounds who have gone on to serve their communities in a variety of ways.

Established in 1986, the program is a collaborative effort between the Childbirth and Family Life Preparation Department of Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre and the Humber College School of Health Sciences.

The program prepares childbirth educators to offer appropriate and effective childbirth education. Individuals enrolled in the program will be taught skills in group facilitation, cooperative learning and experiential teaching techniqes that appeal to women in various social contexts.

Program Goals:

  • To develop knowledge, curricula and teaching strategies applicable to a broad range of community settings
  • To foster informed choices for childbearing families
  • To explore the history and philosophies of childbirth education and their relationship to the improvement of women's health and status in society
  • To develop an awareness of options and community resources for care in the childbearing years
  • To develop skills in teaching strategies for coping with the physical and emotional stresses of pregnancy, labour and the postpartum
  • To develop group facilitation skills that consider the individual learner's needs and expectations
  • To develop an awareness of the social dimensions of health

Program Courses

The Childbirth Educators Certificate Program consists of four levels:

Level I

  • Childbirth Education Study Guide
  • Breastfeeding Basics
  • History and Philosophy of Childbirth
  • Issues in Childbirth

Level II

  • Adult Education and Group Dynamics
  • Pain Management During Labour
  • Prenatal Class Observations
  • Labour and Delivery Observations

Level III

  • Curriculum Development 1: Theoretical Design
  • Curriculum Development 2: Practical Application

Level IV

  • Teaching Practicum

Distance Education Learning:

No matter your location, Humber is interested in making the Childbirth Educators program accessible to you. Many courses are available through distance learning. Groups of 20 or more can request that a satellite program be organized. When making application, please enquire for further information if you are interested in our distance education learning opportunities.
